A heartfelt story that illuminates the challenges and triumphs of a neurodivergent teenager with ASD.
This novel offers a raw, heartfelt journey into the life of a neurodivergent teenager navigating the complexities of adolescence with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Through unfiltered moments of struggle and resilience, the story sheds light on the mental health challenges often faced by young people with neurodiversity. It dives into the feelings of isolation, confusion, and frustration that accompany the teenage years, highlighting the misunderstandings from peers and family dynamics that can arise.
Yet, the tale doesn’t shy away from the difficult parts; it confronts them head-on, ultimately revealing a world where hope, connection, and understanding make all the difference. Written by 14-year-old Bethany Lunney, this book captures a rare, authentic voice that resonates deeply, inviting readers to empathize with the protagonist’s journey and fostering dialogue about acceptance and the beauty of diversity.
I felt a passion to write a novel from the perspective of a neurodivergent teenager—by a neurodivergent teenager…me! Living with ASD has been both a gift and a challenge, giving me deep insight into the mental health struggles many young people face. Diagnosed at 11, I found few books that truly captured the reality of severe mental health issues from a young person’s viewpoint. Most were written by adults, often missing the rawness of the experience. I aimed to change that with my novel, offering an honest, sometimes brutal look at life with ASD while showing moments of hope and kindness.
This is actually my second published work. I wrote my first novella, Goodbye Granny Rose, at age 10, with proceeds going to Acorns Children’s Hospice. I also enjoy writing poetry to express myself, sometimes performing it live.
In my free time, I love walking the Malvern Hills with my family and our dog, Biscuit, as well as competitive swimming and drama. Thank you for reading my story—I hope it might inspire yours.

Helen Pugh"It’s been a long time since I read a book that left me speechless, but If Only did just that. The story follows two young girls coping with very real, intense traumas. Zoe feels distant from her peers, while Ellen faces experiences no child should. Through fate, the girls come together, helping each other face their pain. This book is raw and honest—I felt every bit of their struggle and even cried along with them. The issues are tough but important, mirroring real-world challenges. The journey of forgiveness especially struck me. With well-developed arcs and moving prose, If Only is a book I’ll keep forever. A must-read recommendation, but keep tissues handy."

"I’m amazed that Bethany wrote If Only between the ages of 12 and 14! This is a truly marvelous story, and I can hardly believe she was so young. The themes are beautifully woven throughout the chapters. The story follows Ellen, a young girl who takes on the care of her baby sister Mabel due to their mother’s neglect, only to face tragedy. Meanwhile, Ellen faces cruelty from classmates who reject Zoe, a girl struggling with social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Bethany brilliantly brings Ellen and Zoe together when Zoe’s family fosters Ellen, who’s never been to school. If Only is a powerful and moving read for all ages."
